What is the best computer GO program now?
According to Dr. James Kuodo Huang in 1980s, any good mathematician can prove that computer GO program will be able to beat professional GO players in the long run. In 1983 Dr. Huang began to develope his own GO system as part of his AI project in PC systems (S100 system first and Intel based IBM PC systems later) and many varied models written in many different programming languages. He used to think his GO systems are theoretically the best but too much work to finish. He taught many programming language courses some go related projects. However before 1985, the strongest known GO program was designed by Bruce Wilcox of Bolt,Beranek and Newman, Incorporated.
First version is on an IBM mainframe. His program took 7 men-years, 8K lines of LISP Code, and 3MB of memory in main frame.
Second version, called NEMESIS...The GO Master, took 1 person-year, 13.5K lines of C code, and 146 Kb of memory on an IBM PC.
After 1993:Professor Chen Zhi-Xing's GO program has won 7 times World champion among computer GO programs.
This could be the strongest GO progrm for a while before 2004. The professor Chen's program is 405MB that runs on IBM PC. He is a professor in Guang Zou Zhong Son University in Southern part of China but their Go system was still weaker than amateur 4K level. After Dr. J. Kuodo Huang discovered the Self-reproducing Machine Learning (SR Machine Learning technology) which was published in 2005, the Go systems have become much stronger than before. Up to the end of 2009, the strongest GO systems in the world could possibly sometimes reach to amateur 2D level.
However GO systems'level were still far behind human players'level. Therefore Developing GO system still is very interesting subject of Artificial Intelligence before 2016.
On March 8, 2016 the supercomputer-based AlphGo Go system beat former world champion Mr. Lee from Korea.
In 2017, computer GO systems are beating professional GO players even the number one ranking pro player of 2017 Ke Je.
